Nestled by the
banks of the River Tay, amid stunning scenery, sits Dunkeld. You
can almost feel the history in the atmosphere as you walk around
what was once the ecclesiastical capital of Scotland.
Around the year
700 followers of St Columba founded a monastery in Dunkeld. In
878 the bones of St Columba were moved here from Iona for safety
and remained until 1560. The Cathedral, now standing on the site
of the former monastery, was started in 1318 and completed in
1448. During the bloody time of the Reformation the Cathedral
was destroyed, but partially re-roofed in 1600 when it became
a kirk. In the wake of the Battle of Killiecrankie in 1689 most
of the town was burned to ashes during fighting between Jacobite
and Government forces.
The Dukes of
Atholl rebuilt Dunkeld in the 18-1900s.
Perthshire is
the garden county of Scotland. It's scenery ranges from luxuriant
